‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.’

Aristotle

Lack of self-worth

In this example the story began with issues to do with food, but ended up with issues about self-worth. Notice the three main triggers in the arrows: lack of trust, loneliness, and time pressure. All the beliefs, decisions, and negative feelings kept the cloud spinning, with loops of energy going around and around keeping it stuck. The way one thought linked to another almost made sense, but the overall cloud seemed quite illogical. Despite all evidence of success, this woman trashed herself as a complete failure, because she was convinced she wasn’t good enough. Having suffered many disappointments in personal relationships, her hopes were now dashed. Her dreams, fantasies, and expectations of happiness seemed out of reach. Despite doing lots of self-improvement work, her self-esteem remained low. In fact her constant efforts to lose weight, be more attractive, and improve herself reinforced the negative self-assessment and kept the dynamic of the cloud firmly in place.
